What are the conventions of a Hollywood film? How is this one similar/different?
Conventions of a Hollywood film include the following: a large production budget, CGI, Hollywood stars, and Hollywood production companies. Hollywood is used to describe the entire United States film industry, thus making the movies they produce American films.
For one, the film is in Spanish, which is atypical for a Hollywood film. Secondly, the depiction of fairy tales is not typical for if it were to be a Hollywood film. I feel that Hollywood has made fairy tales a genre that naturally and always provides a happy ending and a storyline everyone can predict and expect. However, I feel that del Toro wanted to provide a darker and more evil side of fairy tales that Hollywood seems to overlook. In that, though, there is a great use of costuming, designs, and computer generated effects to achieve a film of a darker fantasy. Total, the budget of this production was about 13.5 million EUR, or 19 million in USD dollars.

However, in the Labyrinth and the quests she is required to go on, she realizes that she is in control of herself. This leads to the discussion of rebellion: The quests she goes on require tasks that contrast the standards of the human world, thus developing her character to act stronger in the human world when responding to commands. Thus, leading to choice where Ofelia then realizes that there is an option between being controlled and rebelling, and that she ultimately has the choice between those two of what she does. When countered by different situations where she has to choose, we can see how Ofelia outweighs certain decisions because of what she believes is morally right and wrong.
