Collaborative Film: Pre-Production Part 3

Pitch
  • Idea Title: Dreams to Reality
  • Logline: A teenage girl and guy end up dating each other after one decides to ask the other out despite individual differences. 
  • Synopsis: A teenage girl sees a guy while out walking around one day. She is so intrigued by him that she begins to create and daydream of an alternate reality where they are together. After a few days, she begins to routinely see him and decides to make her move. 
  • Genre: Drama/Romance
  • Setting: Downtown Mechanicsburg or Walden for initial sighting to assimilate a busy city life
  • Duration (throughout film): First Incident + Turning point 1 + Point of No Return + Major Setback = 3 weeks (possibly choose a day/pattern of days when they see each other, i.e. Tues/Thurs, Sat, etc.)
  • Script: A poem written by Alexa
Treatment
  • Theme: Looking Inward
  • Hook: The poem begins with establishing shot of street = formal balance (perhaps during sunrise to symbolize new beginnings)
  • Inciting incident (disrupts normalcy): The girl passes the boy (opposite side of the street) while walking around, they lock eyes and share a special moment
  • Turning point 1 (change of plans): It is seemingly love at first sight for the pair but they are going opposite ways so they do not even get the chance to meet. The girl begins daydreaming constantly about him and their relationship they would have shared if they had the chance to at least meet. 
    • Jumpcut/zoom to the characters going out for food on the same street
    • Jumpcut/zoom back to girl still standing at the street from initial incident, making the audience realize she’s daydreaming
  • Point of no return (major victory or failure): As the days pass, they begin seeing each other routinely; however, only the girl recognizes this which makes her start to overanalyze their relationship despite having not yet met. 
    • Girl is doing things to prepare herself for that specific moment when she knows she’ll see him (spend hours picking outfits, walking the same street multiple times, practices a speech in her head, etc.)
    • Coincidentally finds him on another girl’s social media (mutual friends) = overanalyzing begins
  • Major setback: The girl, feeling lost and alone, decides that he is not interested and she moves on. 
    • Girl is sad for a couple times after her decision and doesn’t see him walk the same street
  • Turning point 2 (new truth): One random day a few weeks after she decides to move on, she turns the corner on the street that she routinely walks on and runs into him. They introduce themselves.
  • Climax (win or lose): The girl and boy begin dating and living out the dream reality the girl had once thought of based on the principle that everything happens for a reason.
Alexa and I have chosen to create an avant-garde film for our assessment because we feel that it is easier to cast and create while it is also our favorite idea out of the two that we narrowed it down to; personally, I think that an avant-garde film demonstrates both of our strengths in the roles that we chose to be assessed on. For Alexa, since she is writing a poem, it goes really well with an abstract idea in which there is no strict correlation between what is happening in the film with the script. Instead, it should be able to convey a feeling of hopefulness by following a short journey of unrequited, unknown love to one that which it blossoms. As for myself being the cinematographer, I find that I am most fascinated in creating a montage editing style for an avant-garde film; thus, it has me thinking of what kind of shots I should be taking in order to achieve the end product. I really like this idea overall because I can relate strongly to the girl character in which she creates scenarios with a boy that she has not even met; I do like to think that most love stories have a happy ending, so I am satisfied with the resolution of this film and the journey towards it. This will probably be my favorite film to create, and I am excited to read Alexa;'s poem for it.
