Avant Garde Film: Resolution and Aspect Ratio

Resolution and its aspect ratio play a large role in producing films. From class, we learned the different types of resolution and aspect ratios. The photo above is something we made in class to represent and demonstrate the different types of resolution: 4096x2160, 1920x1080, 1440x1080, 1280x720, 720x480, and 640x480. Respectively, they each have a ratio, indicating the dimensions of the media by the width to the height: 16:9 and 4:3. In relation to importance, it helps determine the quality of the format of the video or image on the screen it appears on, for example, televisions. Toy Story Chase Scene - Tempo Analysis

Interpretation/Meaning In the embedded Toy Story scene, the main protagonists Buzz and Woody are chasing the moving truck to catch up with the other toys they've been separated from. Within the same scene, the producer includes Scud, the dog, chasing the two protagonists. To begin, the tempo that is created in this particular scene utilizes shot length, camera movements, and camera angles. According to our film textbook, shorter scenes create a rapid emotion and force the audience to comprehend and adjust their understanding of the events quicker than a scene with longer shots; longer shots are used to slow down the pace of a scene. Because the chase scene is so intense and action-packed, the cut transitions help make the audience feel like they are on the edge of their seat, waiting and watching in suspense in addition to the short lengths of each clip. Treatment Theme: Looking Inward Hook: Sean and Carter are best friends. Inciting incident (disrupts normalcy): Sean eats the last cookie; it was Carter’s favorite kind. Turning point 1 (change of plans): Sean does not apologize, so Carter says it’s fine, but he really is hurt about it. Point of no return (major victory or failure): Carter does not talk to Sean for a couple days, almost ruining their friendship. Major setback: Sean is unbothered by the fact that Carter stopped talking to him. Turning point 2 (new truth): Carter is hurt because the last cookie was the last cookie his grandma made before she died of a sudden heart attack. Climax (win or lose): Carter offers Sean a cookie as a peace offering, and Sean gets food poisoning because Carter “poisoned” the cookie as revenge.
