Directors use of montages to depict a certain emotion of a character or vibe of a scene by the shots surrounding the original shot. Montages are composed of opposing concepts to form a new idea that may not necessarily be narrative but to evoke emotions and reactions by the audience. Montages can follow a storyline, can be interpretive, or can be used to consolidate a period of time within a frame of shots.
From the video we watched in class, the monage follows the idea of a concept versus an opposing concetual idea to form another idea or “synthesis.” This pattern repeats itself and then a montage unfolds. Overall, a montage is used to illustrate the combination of ideas in order to provoke a certain emotion from the audience based on the shots surrounding the original idea.
