Camera Angles, Movements, and Shot Types

Crane Down:
- a feeling of falling into the character's world or being dropped into the scene

Crane Up:
- a feeling of how small the character is or how large their challenging obstacle is

Crane High to Low Angle:
- makes a character look strong; there's a feeling of authority

Handheld Camera:
- shaky and unsettling but it makes the shot feel very strange and dangerous

Quick Pan:
- can change the direction of emotion really quickly

Quick Push In:
- a feeling of surprise or shock

Slow Dolly In
- creates tension, feels intimate and can make the audience uncomfortable; it helps share emotions the character is facing at the moment

Slow Dolly Out:
- the character is emotionally lost or abandoned; there is an emotion of empathy felt for the character

Dolly Across:
- reveals an action or a change of emotional direction

Glidecam Shot:
- epic, dreamlike

Handheld Camera
- feels edgy; a stressful, pushing emotion into your face

360 reveal
- a "calm before the storm" feeling; a survey of the situation as if something is coming/about to happen

Zolly = Dolly + Zoom
- background gets larger or smaller but the character remains the same size; there is an overwhelming emotional feeling like an out of body experience

Movement can create emotion or help to establish and emphasize the emotion that you want.
